Local Rules: Cold War Commander

Tunnel Spots
Using the tunnel spot rules from Ambush Valley the NVA/VC players gets to put 5 tunnel spots around the board. The player can then use these spots to enter/leave the tunnel system and move quickly around the board. The US/ARVN player can try to find the destroy the tunnel spots.

FAC
The 'Air Support' section I find too restrictive for a Vietnam setting, so I allow the FAC to call for air support once every turn(not having to buy it before the start), the type of plane is decided in a random fashion along with its load out. The cost of an FAC is the average cost of all aircraft available. I also put a -1 attack penalty for using napalm against a target in the jungle (this came from A Lonely Kind of War, Forward Air Controller, Vietnam).

Clear the Hill

Clear the Hill

August 1966: Search & Destroy

US Forces Briefing:
Battalion LRP engaged 3 VC carrying rifles and what appeared to be supplies in the vicinity of hill 754 just inside the border with Cambodia. B company engaged a large force of VC/NVA 5 km to the north and command suspects a VC supply base is in the area of Hill 754 and requires a sweep of the hill and surrounding locations be carried out.

1/5th  Air Cavalry is to air assault into the clearing, LZ Yankee and secure the LZ before moving out and clearing Hill 754. Once the high ground is declared clear, additional troops will airlift in and the LZ will be expanded for further operations.

Two batteries of the 1/21st Artillery (Airmobile) are available to support the mission, along with a Command & Control UH-1D with FAO & FAC on board. Two sections of Huey Hogs from the Aeroweapons Platoon will also support the landings.

NVA Forces Briefing

An American patrol attacked one of our squads close to our supply base yesterday and we have reason to believe they will come back to investigate further. No 1 Company ware defending the base and its immediate surrounds. The Supply Base must be defended at all costs, the rest of the battalion will move south to reinforce No 1 Company.

        1x RR.57mm

        3x Companies
          1x HQ
          1x Sappers + RPG2
          1x HMG

          3x Platoons (NVA Regulars)

Additional:
    1x Ambush
    3x AP booby trap
    3x Bunkers

The NVA troops deploy as follows:

One company, to deploy around Hill 754 staying west of the river. These may be deployed in pre-positioned bunkers.

One ambush location to be marked on the NVA players map, up to 3 platoons can be placed in the reserve.

The rest of No1 Company can be deployed at the players desecration.

The rest of the battalion will arrive using Mobile Deployment on the north edge of the table and move towards Hill 754, it will take a successful command roll (-1 to CV) from the battalion CO to change the direction of advance of any of the companies.

Once the battalion arrives at the hill it can orientate to attack the US Player.

(Due to models not being ready i changed the scenario)
The scenario takes place in the jungle, only the LZ is clear.

The battalion air assaults into a clearing east of the river, 1st and 2nd companies move quickly across the river via the two fords 1st company triggers an ambush and 2nd company flanked the ambushers.

End of the first turn for the US side..

After some shocking die rolls the 1/5th does not advance, allowing the NVA reinforcements to enter the table and move south to the hill.

NVA side get a fog of war card and a US platoon triggers a booby trap and is suppressed.

NVA HQ suffers a command blunder..

The US FAC desperately trying to spot the NVA moving on the trail..

Another fog of war card for the NVA, off table heavy mortar disrupts the US advance..

The NVA reinforcements get to the hill first..

US assault is stopped..

Finally! the FAC spots movement and calls in an air strike, and A1 "Sandy" deals a blow to the NVA flanking move..

The A1 "Sandy" right on the money again!

The 1/5th successfully disengages and heads back to the LZ for pick up..

The NVA lost 5 platoons while the US lost 4, the US failed to take the hill.

Due to the jungle and having to close with the NVA the US was unable to use the Hogs or Artillery and only managed 2 air strikes.

The British in Vietnam??

This picture was taken by a US unit operating in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam, it is the unmistakable shape of an Avro Vulcan Bomber operated only by the Royal Air Force..
